Ford GT40 MKII

Ford lauched its own effort to create a GT prototype in 1963. The most powerful of all the race cars participating in car races at the time was the Ferrari, and though Ford made efforts to acquire Ferrari in order to be able to compete in the Le Mans, these efforts ended in failure. Thereafter, noting the similarities to the Ferrari in the GT image and Eric Broadlay’s Roala GT, Ford acquired the Roala GT and concluded a one-year contract with Broadlay to engage in the development of a Ford design. The GT40 revealed at the 1964 New York Auto Model Show had a semi-monocoque configuration, and its height was a mere 40 inches. The GT40 began to participate in racing in 1964. This was the Mk.II, mounting a 7 lit. V8 engine of 485HP. This vehicle gamered a one-two-three finish at the Daytona 24-hour race, and in the same year beat the Ferrari hands down for another one-two-three finish for its first Le Mans win. Firebird Funny Car

The third and last of my dragsters series is a Pontiac Firebird Funny Car driven by Randy Anderson in 1997, Revell-Monogram kit at 1/24th scale.

STP Firebird Pro Stock

They’re legendary as the fastest Detroit doorslammers in drag racing competition! They are the track-burning machines of the professional Pro/stock class, replacing fuel funny cars as drag recing’s most popular class. Externally identical in appearance to popular street machines such as the Chevy Beretta, Pontiac Firebird and Ford Probe, they are thoroughbred racing machines under the skin. The powerful Petty Blue STP Firebird is piloted by “Trickie Rickie” Smith, a top NHRA and IHRA Pro/Stock competitor who holds five championchips in IHRA competiton! His tubular frame Firebird sports the latest advances in chassis technology including a funny car “cage” sorrouding the driver. This powerful machine is powered by a big block GM motor that displaces 500 cu. in. in NHRA competition and a whopping 700 cu. in. in IHRA drag Racing. This motor is fitted with dual Holley carbs on a hand-built alloy mainfold and utilizes Pontiac cylinder heads and lightweight valve covers. Revell-Monogram kit at 1/24th scale.

You might trouble tagging a blond from California as the fastes lady at the strip but there’s no argument: Shelly Anderson is both the quickest and fastes famele driver in NHRA history with her career best 4.658 second ET at 316.23 mph run. Shelly was the NHRA National Record holder in elapsed time from October 1994 to 1995. Her first career victory was the 1993 Keystone Nationals; one of only five woman drag racers to win na NHRA National Event title in a professional category. Shelly began driving rails in Top Alcohol Dragster in 1992, and moved into Top fuel at the Mopar Mile-High National that very same season. It really is like a family outing when the Andersons go to the drag strip. Shelly’s father Brad Anderson is a three-time NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion and Shelly once served as him crew chief. Her brother Brad is a two-time NHRA Top Alcohol Funny car Champion, who will move into a nitro Funny Car as Shelly’s teammate for the 1997 drag racing season. Not so surprisingly, their mother Carol handles many of the management duties for this family-run racing team. The kit replicates Shelby Anderson’s Western auto/ Parts America/Texico Havoline Top Fuel Dragster as it appear during the NHRA 1997 season.

Oldsmobile "kodak" 1990

Thanks Motorsport Modeller, I used the usual Tamiya masking tape, is very easy to mask the Sauber's kit. Sponsored by Kodak, the Ernie Irvan driven Winston Cup Oldsmobile race car is easy to pick out on the race track with its distinctive Kodak yellow paint scheme. The Kodak film Olds has become a familiar car in the Winston Cup circuit, and has become a real contender, especially since being driven by Ernie Irvan. 1990 was Ernie’s first year with the Kodak team, but not his first year in the Winston Cup series. Ernie moved from Salinas, California, to be near where the action is and has been in the middle of a lot of real action on the track ever since. In ’89 he had four top-ten finishes while with another team and expects to do better with his Kodak Olds. He is a top-ranked short track contender doing very well in “local” races and fully expects to be a champion in the top NASCAR series. Ernie’s Olds is powered by a small-block GM V-8 worked over to 358 cubic inches and produces close to 600 horsepower (exact figures are a team secret), enough to push the Kodak car over 200 MPH on the longe tracks. Althrough the rules stipulate that stock block, heads, front cover and other componentes be used, a lot of hightech work is done inside the engines nonetheless. Special ceramic coatings on cylinders, valves and combustion chambers, computer designed camshafts, coolant and oil flow/temperature management are part of the art and technology that takes place. Considering that the best small block street engine ( the L98) GM puts into the Corvette produces 245/250 horsepower with computerized fuel injection, 600 HP with a single four-barret isn’t shabby at all. Aerodynamics also play a major part and any little improvement in reducing drag is equal to free horsepower. Front air dams, flush fitting glass, rear spoilers and smooth blended contours all help the already sleek Olds. AMT kit at 1/25 scale.
