Mercedes-Benz 300SLR

Mercedes 300SLR drove by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson to win the 1955 Mille Miglia, Monogram kit at 1/24th scale. In the early 1950’s Mercedes-Benz technical manager Rudolf Uhlenhaut had a desire to return the company to its former preeminence by entering the post war road race scene. The result was the famous 300SL coupe, with gull-wing doors necessary, because the Cage-like tube frame ran so high in their body work. The aluminium-bodied pure racing versions were very successful, winning the 1952 24 hours of Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana Mexican endurance race. The production model debuted in 1954 and is a worldwide acknowledged classic. These results convinced Mercedes to take the next step. Director of competition Alfred Neubauer developed the 300SLR, a sports car similar to its W196 Grand Prix cars. Using a tube frame similar to the 300SL, the 300SLR had increased performance with the straight-eight engine from the W196. At 3 liters, and output up to 310hp, the 300SLR achieved a top speed of 180 mph in 1955. The 300SLR team won the 18th International ADAC Eifelrennen at the Nurburgring, the Swedish Grand Prix, the Targa Florio and the Tourist Trophy in Dundrod, Britain.
